This project was set around the film ‘Birdman’ which was specifically picked out to be a difficult subject for it. The task was also done as a part of a three-person group. This meant we had to communicate what parts each of us would be doing and also use the gitflow method of development to work effectively as a team.
Our team decided that a major theme of the film was keeping grasp on reality and dealing with a new venture. We decided to focus in on a specific part of the film which was the protagonist trying to get back to the play on time after having a lot too drink. This gave clear goals to the game and then we added in the delusions he was seeing into a state within the game which would help him in certain circumstances but hinder in others. This meant the game was a puzzle-based speed runner.
Development involved the game being broken down into sections. I was in charge of the level generation and creation. To achieve this, I developed a random level generator which used a ‘tile’ system. This worked by having tiles that would connect in certain ways and have specific parts on them. I then developed a system to allow editing of this in real-time to allow for a more iterative process which hopefully allowed a more polish and developed game.
The overall project was good but too simplistic to be an enjoyable game in my personal opinion. The level design was poor which was mainly down to me and there was a lack of challenges and progression that could take place.
