The new game we have to develop had to relate to the film ‘Birdman’ which was specifically selected to be obtuse. The idea of this was to stretch our creativity and see what we could come up with. This task would also be the first group project for this module.
Watching the Film
The starting point of this project entailed us watching the film. While watching I was analysing each scene and seeing what possibilities they presented. I also tried to figure out what the main theme of the movie was. As the film was quite open to interoperation it allowed many avenues but also made it difficult to come up with a solid base which could be recognized. The major aspect I took away from the film was the main character was struggling to adapt to the changes in his life and couldn’t keep a grasp on reality. Another prominent theme that came up throughout was of selling out being something that give security and fame as being ‘true’ to your art from will be painful, arduous and soul destroying.
Concepting
We were then assigned random groups and had to develop a game together. This required much talking and communication between one another and after a week we had a coherent theme and the mechanics designed. The game would be set around a scene where the protagonist becomes drunk one night before the play and has to make his way across the city back to the theatre. The mechanics involved the player switching between the ‘bird’ state which was this surreal state and normal state. The ‘bird’ state would allow the player to make their way through parts that they couldn’t before but would cost sanity. If sanity became too low the player would lose. As the protagonist in the film was against a time limit to get back we also incorporated this to add a sense of urgency.
